I'm a Barbie Girl

Question: what do you get when you cross a group of creative couture talent with the landmark birthday of one of the world's most famous fashion icons?

Answer: Barbie fever.

Barbie, the woman has needs no introduction, (and no surname), turned 50 earlier this year, and the fashion world has been turning out in full force to celebrate. In February, New York Fashion Week went Barbie mad, with 50 of New York's hottest designers, including Calvin Klein and Vera Wang, sending Barbie inspired outfits down a real life catwalk. And now, a selection of high profile designers, including British talent Danielle Scutt, Roksanda Illincic, and hot London based designer, Henry Holland, have collaborated with Mattel to make swatch size outfits to go on sale as new additions to Barbie's wardrobe.

Though both Danielle and Roksanda's outfits are stunning in their miniature grandeur, my favourite offering has to be Henry's checked skirt suit ensemble, inspired by his A/W 08 collection. Though Henry admits to using his sisters Barbie's for target practice as a child, he says that now he feels that dressing Barbie is an honour, as if he were dressing a famous celebrity. But while Henry loves Barbie's iconic look, he certainly hasn't stinted in dolling out his signature House of Holland style, drenching all of Barbie's 11 and a half inches with Brit cool. Decked in a purple check, pleated mini kilt, with a matching cropped tweed jacket and grey jacket, Barbie looks edgy and cool, her long, painted lashed hidden behind a statement eye patch made from the same fabric as the suit.

Henry even hacked off Barbie's long locks with a pair of shears, transforming Barbie into a mini Agyness Deyn, with a choppy blond bob. Though this style is reminiscient of the childhood hair cuts rebellious little girls treated their Barbies to, the difference is, this is one hair style Barbie won't ask her hairdresser to fix.

Holland's Barbie, along with other designer collaborations with Mattel, and a whole host of avant-garde Barbie memorabilia, will be on sale in April, in a temporary Barbie pop-up shop in Dover Street Market. With Barbie fever spreading fast, resistance to the lure of her charming smile and enviable wardrobe is futile, and visiting this mini Barbie boutique is mandatory. Though with each doll priced at over £180 each, frugal fashionistas might be wise to save their pennies and grab a life size piece of the Barbie inspired action instead.

My Wardrobe My Life

Don't worry, I'm not normally this much of a poser, but when my amazing photography student friend, (who also took these) asked me to model for her portfolio, I was happy to oblige. Asked to dress in a way that was 'casual and laid back', but also 'original and distinctively me', this is what I came up with; one of my favourite outfits that encapsulates my idea of casual.

This collarless white shirt is a Topshop bargain, a go-with-anything wardrobe staple that adds a touch of effortless cool to any outfit. Originally bought to dress down a ladylike skirt from H&M for a university interview, this shirt is a new addition to my wardrobe, but is fast becoming a favourite. I love the chic feel of the bracelet length sleeves and the pintuck ruffles on the bib, while the simple cut and soft, flannel fabric gives a folksy feel. When I wear this shirt I feel a bit like a hippie songstress, teamed with a quirky 'bird in a cage' pendent necklace (Accessorize), natural make up and sixties eyes, all I need is an acoustic guitar ...

I wore the shirt with my favourite pair of Topshop skinny jeans. My first pair of skinnies, I've had these grey/indigo jeans since I was 14, and even though they're starting to loose their shape, they're so comfortable that I refuse to trade them in for a new pair. I love wearing these jeans with this brown mini check waistcoat from H&M, another wardrobe oldie, this waistcoat is a versatile goldie. With mini cloth covered buttons and pocket watch pockets, this waistcoat has a suitably 'old mannish' feel about it, like a farmers flat cap, while the satin inner lining adds a luxurious touch.
To finish the outfit off I added a humbug striped straw trilby. An absolute steal from H&M menswear, this trilby is perfect for giving a masculine, day time touch to flirty, feminine outfits that are a bit too girly for my taste on their own. Despite being permanently affixed to my head last summer and getting doused in beer at Underage Festival last year, this hat still comes up good and has held it's title as one of the most flattering things in my wardrobe. Nnow that spring is in the air, I can't wait to make it a wardrobe regular all over again.

It Takes Two

Previously an outsider in the world of designer footwear, 2009 has signalled the much deserved coming of age for Brazilian shoe label 'Melissa' with two high profile collaborations with Brit queen of punk style, Vivienne Westwood, and Iraqi/British architect, Zaha Hadid.

Known for her wild footwear, perhaps most famously the sky scrapper platforms that a young Naomi Campbell fell over in on the catwalk, Vivienne might have been an obvious collaborator, but, to me at least, her designs are unexpected. If you're expecting post-punk Dr Marten style boots, or stilt like platforms, you might be shocked by Vivienne's lady like heels and pumps. Part of Vivienne's Anglomania label, these shoes comes in four styles, heart detail 'Lady Dragon' heels, t-bar Mary Jane's (shown in green and fuchsia), three strapped flats, (shown in blue), and 'ultragirl' peep toe pumps, (shown in red). All the styles come in a variety of colour combinations, here are my favourite, but for the full range check out the Melissa collection.

While Vivienne's shoes are undeniably gorgeous, (I'm in love with those white heels with the red heart), Zaha Hadid' s are also incredible. A visionary architect, whos most famous projects include the Bridge Pavilion in Zaragoza, the Rosenthal Centre for Contemporary Art in Ohio, and the Phaeno Science Centre in Wolfsburg, Zaha Hadid is one of the few high profile women in the world of architecture, and certainly the most fashionable. The influence of her deconstructivist architectural style is obvious in her designs, with each shoe looking as fascinating and futuristic as the buildings that have no doubt inspired them. I love the fact that these shoes propose an interesting marriage between fashion and industrial design, but at the same time are incredibly wearable, not to be left unworn in a box, like Hadid's architectural works, these shoes are for living in. And, lets face it, how cool would it be to walk down the street wearing a piece of cutting edge architecture with your jeans?

So futuristic, so brilliantly cool, just beware when wearing them in the sun: side effects may include bizarre tan lines.

A Very Fashionable Weekend

London fashion week has been and gone, and for us lesser mortals, without press badges or socialite status, to only way to grab a slice of the action is through tickets to London Fashion Weekend; and on saturday that is exactly what a very fashionable friend and I did. Held at a specially built site on the grounds of the Natural History Museum in Kensington, LFWeekend is part trade fair, part fashion showcase. With two floors of fashion stalls, selling clothes, but mainly bags and accessories by independent designers, as well as some bigger names, LFWeekend is a great opportunity for style stalker to grab some goodies with a favourable discount.

Impoverished as I am after America, I was a good girl and managed to resist splashing out, and though I was tempted by a pink floral hair clip from Anna Lou of London, and a Lulu Guinness umbrella, (a bargain at £15), I contented myself with my freebies. That's right. Freebies.

Okay, so it wasn't a total freebie, but with my ticket I got a copy of Elle magazine and an Elle goodie bag, which included an Elizabeth Arden eyeliner, perfume sampler, bikini, bag of Lavazza coffee (my coffee of choice and sponsor of the event), a selection of snacks and a twittered about box of luxury tampons ... no, I don't know why either.

Though I appreciated my bag of goodies, a bag of Snack a Jacks proving a useful mid-morning snack, the real highlight of the day was, of course, the fashion show.

Styled by Toni and Guy, and Elizabeth Arden, and held on the same catwalk trod by top designers and globe trotting supermodels earlier in the week, the show featured four mini collections comprised of a variety of pieces by different designers that were styled together to comply to an overall feel or trend.

The four 'scenes' were; American Idol, (think trailer trash, bleached denim and cutoffs), with jeans and shorts by Siwy, tops by Asish and Camilla Starerk and over sized bows by Johnny Loves Rosies. Domestic Goddess (Desperate Housewives with more bright colours and sheer), with shoes by Melissa and Office, and outfits from Osman Yousefzada, Matthew Williamson, Tommy Hilfiger and Ossie Clark. African Queen (tribal prints balanced out with body-con structuring, for which I felt appropriately dressed in an Aztec print body con skirt), with Kurt Geiger shoes, Sam Uni and Malene Birger jewellery, and outfits by Matthew Williamson, Jaeger, Ann-Sofie, American Retro and Aminka Wilmont. Ethereal Nude, (sexy but girly sheer fabrics and nude tones), with nudity expertly de-pornified by Ashley Isham, Areangel, Jasper Conran, Jacob Kimmie and Issa, and balanced out with Swarovski Runway Rocks.

The only downside? There were two queues leading into the catwalks, my friend and I joined the shorter queue early and stood near the front of the line for twenty minutes, only when the doors were opened, everyone in the other queue was let in before us, so people that had only just rocked up managed to grab front row seats while our diligence was rewarded with seats five rows back from the catwalk, and to add insult to injury, I was seated behind the only guy in the audience, a six foot something with spiked up hair. I did manage to get quite good view though, and even grabbed a couple of snaps, though most of them are quite blurry, (considering the shoes they're wearing, models move surprisingly fast), here are a few of my hot picks from the catwalk, in order of appearance.Look out for my favourite outfits of the day, a blue sheer blouse and harem pant set from the 'Domestic Goddess' scene, and a pair of short tribal dresses from the 'African Queen' look:

The show was great, and afterwards we ventured out into a beautiful day, and enjoyed a long lunch at Italian restaurant Zizzi, followed by a stroll along the Southbank that lead us to the Tate Modern. Here we spend the hours between afternoon and evening hanging out on bright blue and yellow metal bunk beds at Dominique Gonzales-Foerster's dystopian installation, discussing art, politics, society, and whether my make up made me look a bit like Julia Robert's prostitute best friend in Pretty Women or not.

Gareth Pugh, we love yugh

After wowing fashion week crowds in A/W 2008, with his unique 'tribal-cyber-goth' look, this season hot Brit talent, Gareth Pugh merged 'futuristic' with 'period costume' to create yet another distinctive and astoundingly creative collection. At fourteen Gareth found an outlet for his creative talents working a costume designer for the English National Youth Theatre, and so it's not surprising that his latest collection reflects elements of historical design, with giant over sized ruffs, billowing layers of silk, ruffles, strings of pearls attached to gloves, and armour inspired shapes, mixed to perfection with futuristic fashion; spaceship white platforms, vent like rips, and elbow length claw like gloves.

Most interesting of all is Pugh's use of colour, or rather lack of it. With each of his model's sporting head to toe monochrome, (white on the front and black on the back of each outfit), Pugh took the focus away from colour and print, and allowed the incredible structure and construction of his clothes to take the lime light. And rightly so, these final pieces of his collection are simply amazing.

Though his creations are stunning, Pugh's pieces are not known for everyday wear ability, but a spread in the March issue of UK Vogue should help to change this, showing the versatility of Pugh's eye catching platforms, striped leggings and gloves, and their ability to add more than just a touch of spice to any wardrobe. If my budget would allow it, Pugh's striped mini gloves and fingerless elbow length gloves would take pride of place on my arms this spring, and, truth be told, I wouldn't mind giving those ruffled leggings a go either ...

Lets Get Physical

Spring is coming, and with it so are new season resolutions of getting fit in time for summer. While the idea of getting fit might ring the alarm bells that sound just before an American Apparel blow out, (neon leotards and legwarmers anyone?), getting fit doesn't have to mean getting funky, especially if Chanel has anything to do with it. For the park avenue princess desperate to tone up but wouldn't been seen dead in spandex, there is light at the end of the tunnel, with Chanel's line of sports accessories that promise to keep you looking Parisian chic even when you're breaking a sweat.

We all love Chanel, but aren't CC logo tennis rackets, dumbbells and, wait for it, fishing rods taking it a bit far? Well, if Chanel can make sport look this appealing, obviously not. This super cute pink racket is even more appealing than a sexy tennis coach, and was styled by Vogue with tennis superstar Maria Sharaprova last year, and if it's good enough for her ...
While I can't imagine many Chanel devotees getting down and dirty in a game of American football too often, Chanel gives a nod to all the couture tom-boys, and metrosexual jocks out there with a pig skin American football, adorned with the brand's iconic logo. Created in limited supply in 2007, these babies might be oldies, but as far as brand mania goes, they're goldies.

I taken by the kitch but chic feel of all these sporting pieces, but my personal favourite from the collection has to be Chanel bike, the perfect way for the pearl laden eco warrior to travel from shop to shop. This is the transportation equivalent of a 2.55, as understated as a Bentley and as luxurious as a Porshe, only without the carbon footprint and with considerably more quilting. Right now all I can say is , does anyone know where I can get a Chanel bowling ball?

It's official: Clothes Before Hoes is back in town. After a week larging in New York and DC, I'm back. Jet lagged and broke thanks to a trip to Fifth Avenue, I've spend the last few days catching up on coursework and planning my detox, I hate fasting, but after sampling the delights of every deli/burger bar I set eyes on, I really need to. But jet lag and extra pounds aside, I'm still buzzing from the lights of Times Square, the stunning view from the Empire State building, and the culture of DC. A hippie at heart, I love to travel, and after my first trip stateside, I'm itching to go back. So ... any offers to pay for my flight?

The last week as not only been amazing for me, it's also been an incredible week in the world of fashion, with the Brits Awards, Grammies, Baftas and Oscars showcasing the creme de la creme of contemporary couture, and fashion week rocking up on both sides of the Atlantic. I might have missed a lot in the fashion world this week, but one thing I've been certain not to miss is the debut issue of hot new fashion magazine, 'Love'.

'Fashion and fame' is Love in a mission statement, and is brought to us by the Conde Nast publishing house, home of Vogue and Glamour. Flicking through it's first issue, Love is like the cool twenty year old daughter of Tatler and Harper's. Reminiscent of Nylon magazine, Love is a a mixture of fashion, art and pop culture, with more than just a dash of celebrity and society thrown into the mix, served up with Agy D posing as the Queen in a stunning Lanvin dress.I'm loving it's look, lots of bright colours, swirly fonts and beautiful fashion photograghy, as well as its feel, with big, thick pages that make it worthy of even the most fashionable coffee tables. But what I love most about it is it's front cover girl, the punk singer who's known as much for her unconventional image as she is for her music; Beth Ditto. Fashion has long been surrounded by the controversial body image issues generated by the 'size zero' debate, and a world of emaciated models, I think it's refreshing to see a high profile magazine take such a positive stand and place such an unconventional icon on their cover. By the way, did I mention that she's naked?

That's right, daring to bare a few centimetres short of everything, Beth's photo shoot reveals the singer flaunting her body, underarm hair and all. Choosing to adorn her body in with custom made couture by Gareth Pugh and Louis Vuitton, and at times, with nothing at all, Beth's unashamed confidence is the perfect antidote to idolisation of unrealistic, anorexic bodies.

Another reason why I love Love? It features those amazing Loewe hats, not once, but twice; I'm sensing a Love and Clothes Before Hoes style connection! So what are you waiting for, go and grab your copy!

The Recession According to Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld is not a man known to do things by half measures, famous for his luxurious lifestyle and addiction to the finer things in life, Karl once commented that his 'greatest indulgence' is himself as it allows him to 'indulge others'. Proud owner of over 60,000 CDs, 100 iPods and 230,000 books, Karl certainly knows how to indulge himself in as much excess at his pours on his classic and luxurious designs. But this year, in light of the current global economic situation, Karl surprised fashion writers by toning down the Chanel collection at Paris couture week, moving away from his previous fashion spectacles, and into the territory of simplistic recession luxury.

In his couture collection, Karl said that he wanted to "start with a clean sheet of paper". "We are entering a phase of reality fashion." he added, "This is right. This is exactly what Chanel did; she wore the clothes she designed. We talk about the financial crisis, but it is also healthy. People who have been making 20% increase, year after year, and then are not making 20% any more, they are not poor. So don't cry for them. We have got into bad habits and it is not a bad thing to have a new starting point." Strong words from a man once called the 'king of excess'.

Surrounding his catwalk with a simple, virginal white, one of Coco Chanel's favourite colours, Largerfeld set the mood for a fresh start for the fashion year, adding to the simplistic vibe of his catwalk with the beautiful simplicity of flowers, camellias and roses. Celebrity guests, including face of Chanel's Mademoiselle fragrance, Keira Knightly, were seated around small tables adorned with laser cut, paper table cloths, reminiscent of the cut out design dresses seen at Fendi this season.

Lagerfelt kept his couture catwalk look simplistic and classic, with his models clad in a sea of white, occasionally punctuated by black accessories or the occasional all black outfit. He stuck to the classic, understated and structured designs that Chanel is so famous for, adding a recession twist to some of Chanel's iconic outfits. The two piece suit jacket was shrunken to add definition to a minimalistic dress or skirt, while Chanel tweed was transplanted from cardigans to dresses, one of the few 'frivolous' prints used by Lagerfeld in this collection. Instead of jewellery, each model was adorned with paper flowers and feathers, capes and headdresses, the handiwork of Japanese hair stylist, Kamo, whose work provided a counterpoint to Lagerfeld's classic designs, and showed off the beauty of simple things to perfection.

While I think that Karl's pro fur 'the beasts would kill us' views are unfounded and ridiculous, there's no doubt that there's something very special in the simplistic, staid elegance of this collection. Once again, Karl has reminded us what couture is really about, he gets massive Clothes Before Hoes love.

Love Me Do

It's five days until V day, and while I've never spent a Valentine's Day with my special someone (last year I was in Verona, and all the years before have been out of a date), I still know exactly how I would rock a Valentine's look, and if money was no object, this would be my ultimate romantic dinner date outfit. The skirt is very feminine and sexy, and the stylish but tough biker jacket, worn over a sexy nude bra, prevents a sugar rush. These platform sandals, with bondage style straps are both sophisticated and mouth wateringly sexy, giving a sassy kick to the outfit. The attitude of the shoes and jacket are watered down by this delicate satin clutch and stunning accessories, a crystal encrusted gold bangle and super luxurious grey sapphire and yellow gold earrings. Perfect.

Style Icon of the Week: Linda McCartney

Who?: Before she was wife of Paul, and mother to Mary, James, and, perhaps most notably, Stella McCartney, Linda Eastman was a high profile music photographer, who snapped the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and The Who. Her photo of Erci Clapton graced the covers of Rolling Stone in 1968, but six years lates it was Linda herself on the cover. Despite being wife to one of music's greatest superstars, Linda maintained a famously low public profile, shying away from fame and sending her children to state schools, so that they could grow up living a normal life. Despite her musical contributions to The Beatles, (she co-wrote 'Live and Let Die'), and her huge musical success with Paul, in 70's band Wings, which had 12 Top 10 singles, Linda remains most her work as an animal rights activist. After seeing a lamb in a field, as she and her husband enjoyed a lamb sandwich, Linda became a high profile vegetarian, who regularly spoke out on behalf of animal rights groups, including PETA and Friends of the Earth, and created her own line of vegetarian meat substitutes. Stella McCartney has carried on Linda's animal friendly ethic as a vegetarian, who frequently campaigns against the use of fur and animal skin in fashion.

Why?: Speaking in an interview, Stella McCartney spoke of her mother's style as 'grunge before it happened'.

One of my Spain's most prestigious and established fashion houses, and famous for its high quality leather handbags, Loewe hit the catwalks this year with Hai Park and Chanel Iman showcasing it's Spring/Summer fashions. Though often forgotten by the mainstream fashion press, Loewe's latest collection has certainly caught my eye.

Exuding Spanish city chic, (what else would you expect from a label that was official supplier to the Spanish Royal family from 1905), this collection is all about the sophistication of elegant tailoring, with fun assessories and gold embellishments.

I love the structured look of these outfits, the eye catching button detail denotes military and utility chic, bringing the nautical trends of S/S 08 back for another stylish round. Soft fabrics and interesting colours and textures keep the look playful, while sleek, Spanish tailoring keeps things sharp. I love the denim utility mini dress and pocket detail all in one, whose 'gas attendant by day, fighter jet pilot by night' striking silhouette, adds an 'All American' feel to the collection, while the gold piping, eye catching buttons and belt details provides glamour. Hint: the over sized shades and statement bag help too.

If you've been following thus far, you'll know that I'm a sucker for a hat, and I've fallen in love with these military style caps. Designed by legendary milliner Stephen Jones, these quirky caps come in black and white satin, and a radish red suede, all adorned with black piping, gold buttons and black brims. Styled with city tailoring, and playful, pilot-esque suits (below), I would fling one of these caps on with anything, as a focal point for a day to day jeans and t-shirt outfit, or as a quirky cherry on top a summer dress. Be Mine Valentine

It's official: nine days until Valentine's Day. Though the thought of heart shaped boxes of chocolates and plush teddy bears might leave some groaning, for us romance lovers, single or coupled up, Valentine's Day has been marked on our calendars in a big pink letters.

While I won't be with my special someone on Valentine's Day, (my boyfriend while be en piste in the Alps, I'll be at the top of the Empire State building, no, really), for those of you that are lucky enough to be with your Mr or Miss Wonderful to celebrate, now is the perfect time to start dropping gift ideas into conversation. For the shoe lover out there, Alexander McQueen's heart detail, peep toe heels will have you swooning, (as my Twitter followers will know they had me!), and are available in both a sexy black patent with pink piping, and a fun, bold bright pink. For the unconventional Valentine, these heels are also available in green, but made from 100% crocodile hide, my inner animal lover is going to give this green version of the shoe a Clothes Before Hoes thumbs down.

But for me, the gift I'd most like to receive from my lovely Valentine is something from one of my favourite designer's, Vivienne Westwood's Valentine collection. Though, on my boyfriend's full time student budget, a box of delicious Lindor will suffice.

Uniquely Topshop

Another fashionable moment on the high street, this week Topshop is releasing its first pieces in the Spring collection for it’s Unique range. A part of Topshop' s 'The Boutique' collection, a catwalk collection that is showcased at London fashion week, producing bang on trend, original pieces by emerging British designers, all available at my favourite high street fashion store.

My favourite pieces from the collection so far are a 'pot luck' college style, over sized knit jumper, a 'pot luck' over sized cardigan in the same style as the jumper, which has already sold out on the Topshop website, a quirky 'kissometer' print racer back mini dress, an abstract 'lucky' print, 80's style mini dress, and an elaborately studded black blazer, that puts me in mind of a pearly King. True to the brand's name, all these pieces are unique, quirky and fun, guaranteed to get you noticed, all for a high street price, and thought they're all lust worthy, my favourite is the 'pot luck' college jumper. I'd team it with black skinny jeans or cigarette pants, lace up heels or simple pumps for winter, and sling over a vest top and pair of faded denim shorts in summer.

Two words: snow day. While everyone from other, colder parts of the world will be rolling her eyes at my one foot of snow, I was literally shrieking with excitement when I woke up to find that Sunday's snow had stayed, and that been covered by fresh sprinklings of snow that fell during the night and all through the rest of the day. My sixth form closed and all the roads snowed off, I spent the day with one of my best friends, photography student and future Annie Leibovitz to be, Ellie, hanging out in a local field turned winter wonderland. I fell down a snow mini snow drift, got my butt covered in snow, watched little kids sledging and Ellie's sister throw snow dive, before running back into the warm for delicious Cadbury's hot chocolate and the sounds of MGMT.

Not to be forgotten, here's my beautiful little Bichon Frise, wrapped up in a coat and venturing in the garden in the snow. At one point at the snow was so deep that it came up to his nose, he later fell down a snow drift and had to be rescued ... but he actually loved it, and later cried at the front door for me to take him on a mini walk in the snow.

Style Icon of the Week : Stevie Nicks

Who?: Hailed as the ‘Queen of Rock and Roll’ by Rolling Stone magazine, Stevie Nicks is the American singer/songwriter that made it big in the mid-70's with Brit band Fleetwood Mac, before launching her solo career in the 80's, which have collectively spawned forty Top 50 hits to date. Overcoming addictions to cocaine and tranquilisers, Stevie has released six solo albums and is still firing up the charts, with an album due to be released later this year. As well as writing all her own songs, Stevie plays over of six instruments, and is known for rocking out with her trademark half moon tambourine on stage; this girl was no bubble gum rock chick, she's the real deal.

Why?: A fairytale princess caught up in the world of rock, Stevie's style was as original and eclectic as it was impressive. Billowing skirts, lacey shawls, 6 inch platform shoes, layers of black silk and eccentric hats, including mens top hats and feathered berets were all staples on Stevie's impressive and iconic wardrobe. Inspired by one of Clothes Before Hoes's other style icons, Stevie was a huge fan of Janis Joplin and actually owns a strand of Janis' beads, that have graced her stage along with other pieces from her famous collection of jewellery, which also includes the famous 'Stevie moon' crescent moon necklace. Stevie's creative approach to fashion extended beyond her wardrobe, and she was known for decorating her tambourine and mic stand with flowers, ribbons, fabric, beads, scarves, streamers and small figurines, filling whatever stage she was performing on with her style and personality.

What can we learn from her style?: In her days as a member of Fleetwood Mac, Stevie often rocked head-to-toe black, sparking rumours that she was a Wiccan witch, but rather than be beaten into brights, Stevie responded to these rumours saying, '(it's)really unfair to me, I think, for people – other people – to conjure up their ideas of what I am or what I believe in'. Defying trends, Stevie wore what she wanted to wear, how and when she wanted to wear it, and never committed a single fashion faux pas, rather carved out a timeless look all of her own. Stevie's teaches us to be brave and confident in our fashion choices, if we like how we look, that's all that matters, and who cares if people don't like it, why follow the pack when you can re-invent style all on your own?

Birds of a Feather

In contrast to the bold, Stephen Sprouse graffiti prints, one of big hits on the Louis Vuitton S/S catwalk this year were these feathered creations. Part Big Bird and part burlesque queen, I could picture these dresses being worn outside a murky 1920's club in Chicago, with skinny, killer heels, femme fatal red lipstick, black net over white, powdered faces, and a cigarette smouldering at the end of an elegant cigarette holder. Model of the moment, Lara Stone wore a camel coloured version of the dress on the Louis Vuitton catwalk, this decadent cocktail dress providing an elegantly uptown addition to an otherwise tribal, 'safari-city' collection.

Off the catwalk, the new face of Louis Vuitton, Madonna wore a green version of the dress to a Gucci UNICEF party back in November. Though celebrity magazines raised their eyebrows, I loved the way Madonna wore this dress, though I would have styled it without chunky accessories, the collection of heavy bangles did give the dress of a tribal feel, making this statement dress less RnB diva, and more refined fashionista. But for me, I would have worn this without the fishnet tights, nothing personal Madonna, I just hate fishnet tights. What do you think, if you were Madonna would you have flocked to this look, or flown away from it?

Tomorrow I'm visiting an open day at Sussex University, I'm really excited because I've already got an offer from Sussex to study English, so all I need now is my three A's *shudders*...! A self contained sprawling campus situated in the postcard-perfect Sussex Downs, but only a ten minute bus ride from the party city of Brighton, this university is in my top three choices. Sussex alumni include writer of one of my favourite books of all time, Atonement, Ian McEwan, and no less than current editor of in Chief of Vogue, Alexandra Shulman! Basically, very, very exciting. I've got to be at the campus for 9.30, so that's means getting up at ridiculous o'clock to catch the train to Waterloo, and change to Brighton, then change to Falmer; which equals a very early start - on a weekend ... where are my D&G pyjama suits ...?

P is for Peaches

Peaches Geldof, daughter of Bob, former DJ and columnist, and now writer for Nylon magazine, has attracted a lot of media attention in the last few months, whether it's been for allegations of drug taking or her quickie Vegas wedding (and if you believe the papers, quickie Vegas split). But now that she's moved state side, it seems that she's attracting attention for more positive motives, espeicially her latest fashion move, releasing her own capsule collection for iconic London brand, PPQ of Mayfair.

Founded by Percy Parker and Amy Molyneaux, and famous for luxurious and modern, but fuss-free designs and it's music links, (PPQ also runs a record label), PPQ is the perfect fit for Peaches' public image. After modelling for the PPQ catwalk in 2008, it seemed right that the label was the first to launch a clothing collection on her behalf. Designing a range of dresses, bags and separates, Peaches said she drew inspiration from the Japanese street styles of Harajuku, especially the Gothic Lolita look; ring any bells with Gwen Stefani and her LAMB label anyone? Having seen the collection I think that while it plays it safer than it needs to, it's still incredibly stylish, and has a very 'Peaches' feel about it, my favourite pieces from the collection are the 'scripture party dress' (above) and this patent leather vanity bag.

Despite being the former girlfriend of love-of-my-life-to-be Faris Rotter, I've always had a soft spot for Peaches, the quintessential London girl about town, who knows how to cut a look and hangs out with the London rich and fabulous, but since watching her one off reality tv show, 'Peaches: Disappear Here', I've not been so sure. Did anyone see it? Well since the it's main stage Sunday, prime time slot only attracted 8,000 viewers, the odds are that you haven't, so let me summarise it for you: it was shocking. Meant to show the process of Peaches creating her own magazine (Disappear Here), taking it from brainwave to print, the programme showed not much more than Peaches looking great in amazing outfits, and being a "wee bit" of a bitch. Contrary to her usual 'butter wouldn't melt' expression, Peaches came across as a self obsessed, arrogant bully, ridiculing her colleagues and at one point reducing one writer to tears with her sharp tongue. The portrait of Peaches was so unflattering that I was convinced she'd been stitched up by a cruel production team, except it turns out that the whole thing was produced by no less than her father's production company, which begs the question - is this what she's always like, because if that's how she behaves in front of the cameras, I wouldn't want to cross her when the cameraman is on his break ... But even if her on screen persona isn't a sweet as her blond curls might suggest, her collection is still really cute, and definitely worth a gander online at Oli.

At Clothes Before Hoes, technical expertise has never been a strong point, and the very word HTML makes me want to run far, far away. But this week I've impressed myself by putting on my fashionable thinking cap, (a trilby rather than a Giles Deacon inspired head pod) and gone to gadget town, Clothes Before Hoes style, creating new ways for you to keep in touch and follow the blog. As well as the classic 'follow using Blogger feature', I've also enabled the follow with Bloglovin' option, I've only been using Bloglovin' for a few days, but I'm already hooked, it's really easy to use, plus it enables non-Blogger users to follow their favourite blogs; check out the link in the side bar to follow Clothes Before Hoes on Bloglovin' or to create an account. While I've been becoming a regular technologista, I've also been inspired by the lovely people at the Smart Women Company, whose range of fun, slogan stationary and accessories aims to empower women, encouraging them to think for themselves, vote and participate in politics. An American company, Smart Women ship world wide and are stocked in accessory heaven, Tatty Devine, so there's no excuse not to get hooked on these fun, feminist products. My favourite picks for the range are the 'Smart Women Protect Free Speech' lip balm, 'Smart Women Back Up Their Words' mouse mat and the 'Smart Women Mark Their Words' pencils, that promise to make me come over all executive, even when I'm doodling stick men on the backs of receipts! Spray It; Don't Say It

You say 'graffiti prints', I think Salt n Pepa, Primark bowling bags, and the 'I've Got Attitude' scrawl t-shirt I wore as a second skin when I was eleven. But this year, with Marc Jacob's blessing, graffiti prints are right back in style at Louis Vuitton.

In 2001, Marc Jacobs collaborated with American designer Stephen Sprouse to create a range of neon graffiti bags. Famous for his sixties, day-glow graffiti prints, Sprouse rocked the 80's with his loud styles, collaborations with artist Keith Haring, and famous one offs, designed especially for Debbie Harry and Duran Duran. Despite having created several solo collections, and a capsule collection for Bergdorf Goodman, successes were short lived and Sprouse's fashion contributions renamed largely forgotten through the 90's, until his Louis Vuitton collaboration. His range of bags an incredible success, the pieces sold out instantly, making them essential arm candy for new millennium. In 2004, Sprouse died of heart failure, and, in 2006, as a tribute to the designer, and homage to his as a close friend, Marc created another Stephen Sprouse collection, using the materials from Sprouse's 1987 graffiti collection to create a range of bags, shoes and scarves for Louis Vuitton. Once again, it was an instant success, and this year Marc has resurrected Sprouse's designs once more, with a new Stephen Sprouse for Louis Vuitton collection. Released in time to coincide with the exhibition of Sprouse's work at New York's Deitch Gallery, this new range promises to be another hit for Louis Vuitton, prompting another Sprouse revivial.

I love the floral prints used in this collection, and the bright colours, especially the hot fuchsia, would look stunning on sunny days in the city. I'm defiantly a fan of the floral print, pink speedy, a feminine but funky take on the tried-and-testy version, but the graffiti print leggings and courts? I can't help but think they look like something you might stumble across in a discount "fashion" store in Benidorm or on the rails in MKOne. As for the graffiti speedy, while being a downtown twist on an uptown trend, this bag reminds me of the canvas versions, covered with acrylic scrawl found on dodgy market stalls world over; or I am being too harsh? What's your verdict: Stephen Sprouse at Louis V; fashion do or fashion don't?

Style Icon of the Week: Jacqueline Kennedy

Who?: Ever since President Obama's election in November, America's new first lady Michelle Obama has been hailed as the 'new Jackie O', bringing style as well as substance to the White House, but despite her husband's iconic status, many say that no first lady can match up to Jacqueline Kennedy. Living under three different surnames, including Bouvier and Onassis, Jacqueline was best known as Jackie Kennedy, wife of John Kennedy and First Lady from 1961 - 1963. At 31, Jackie was one of America's youngest first ladies, and her young, fresh image brought her fame throughout the world, making her more than just 'the president's wife', but a cultural icon in her own right. After John Kennedy's assassination in 1963, Jackie re-married shipping tycoon, Aristotle Onassis in 1968, enhancing her status as a European, as well as American celebrity. Jackie died in 1994, and following her death was named one of the top twenty most widely admired people of the 20th Century.

Why?: John Kennedy was elected into office in 1961, a time of change in the world of fashion. While some still hung onto the prim and proper 'poodle skirts and sweaters' of the 50's, the rest of the fashion world was on the cusp of the 60's style revolution, and Jackie reflected this in her style. On the campaign trail and in the White House, Jackie shook up the traditional 'frumpy first lady' image, teaming pearl necklaces and gloves with stylish, crisp suits, known for their iconic large lapels, sleeveless dresses in bright colours, pill box hats and delicate clutches that matched her heels. As her husband's position as president became stronger, so did Jackie's style, and in the tragic final year of her husband's presidency, and the years following, Jackie embraced the new casual styles of 60's and 70's high society. Trading in skirts for wide leg jeans and slouchy trousers, pearls for hoop earrings and set hair for free flowing locks, Jackie created her own look, epitomised by her over sized sunglasses and patterned Hermes scarves; and looked stunning every time.
What can we learn from her style?: 'Jackie Kennedy' and 'fashion faux pas' are two phrases that have never been seen in the same sentence. Always immaculately groomed and elegantly turned out, no matter what the occasion or situation, Jackie is a true example of timeless style. Jackie knew how to dress for any situation, whether it was an inauguration ball or stroll down town, always staying within the the bounds of respectable convention but making every look her own. When creating a look, it is crucial that we can adapt it to every situation, even if it means stepping out of our comfort zone, but at the same time, feel free to bend the rules and go against convention. Jackie taught us that you can still be an individual, even if you occasionally have to compromise our style, and that just because you have a dress code to stick to doesn't mean you can't express yourself within it.

Also: After supporting him all through his presidential campaign from the other side of the Atlantic, I am in love with President Obama. He's facing some of the biggest challenges known to any President, and I'm sure it won't be an easy road ahead, but I'm certain that given time, he'll still be able to make the changes that America, and the rest of the world needs. I clapped with happiness, (I'm such a politics neek), when he closed Guantanamo Bay, and I now hope that he turns his attention to the Middle East, to help the poor people of Gaza and defend their rights, while peacefully challenging terrorists, whether they be individual groups or governments with the force of an army.

Lazy Girl Lux

After a long, stressful week (think exams, coursework and insomnia), today I'm officially having a l-a-z-y day; finishing yesterday's neglected post, and relaxing in old skinny jeans and a pyjama top, I'm proud to be a lazy girl. This time last year "fashionable" lounge wear consisted of Juicy Couture and Abercombie tracksuits, Jack Wills hoodies and Ugg boots, but this season lounge wear has left the realm of shapeless velour, and had sashayed its way into high fashion territory.

My favourite Italian designers, Dolce and Gabbana's S/S 09 collection takes lazy girl chic to a brand new level of luxury. Using printed silk, button and waist tie details, this laid back lux would make Hugh Heffner and his smoking jacket proud, this season Dolce and Gabbana have done the unthinkable and made pyjama chic the new hot S/S look. Soft, silky and a timelessly classic but innovative and fun, these pyjama suits are a fresh twist on the power suit, a beautifully luxurious option for an evening occasion, hot date or important appointment. Available with three quarter length or full length, wide leg trousers, as a stunning twinset to be worn over bare skin or silk blouses, these suits are too good for the 9-5. While the light blue, salmon and ivory shades are perfect for daytime or a summer evening event, the darker black and navy colours create a more dramatic effect. My favourite is the rich, crushed raspberry option, it's opulent shade and three quarter length, turned up legs adding a playful touch to this sophisticated look, while D&G teams these suits with bows and heavily baubled necklaces, I'd wear it with simple black heels or ballet flats, and minimal jewellery.

I love the below the knee black and white, textured skirt teamed with a bracelet sleeved white blouse.

Combining an elegant, floor length gown, adorned with silk lilies, with a champagne silk blouse, Dolce and Gabanna have created the ultimate in lazy girl couture chic, the perfect wedding dress for the bride that wants to have an extra long lie in on her special day.

High Street Hot Picks

An early finish from college and late night shopping are a deadly combination, especially when you're trying to save spending money for your BIG FAT AMERICA TRIP - less than a month to go *squeals in embarrassing fashion*. The solution? Leave your cash card at home, and only take with you the money that you need for your bus fare (£4 return), your lunch (£7 for a Pret A Mange salad and carrot juice), and the essential thing that you went in to buy; a new SIM card. Sticking a big fat finger up at Orange (look guys, I love Orange Wednesdays, those 'don't let a mobile ruin your movie' skits are really quite funny and you know how to choose some top notch tunes for your adverts, but I really need to cut down my living costs), I gave up on pay as you go and got an O2 contract SIM, for £20 you get unlimited free texts and 600 minutes of call time - not too shabby.

To congratulate myself on saving so much money (right now I top up around £30 - £40 a month), I took a walk round the high street, but with my cash card safely stowed away today was all about window shopping. It's strange, but when you're officially 'just looking' you seem to notice more things that grab your attention, especially things from the high street end of the high street. So here we have it, my top picks of the British high street, January 2009:

River Island: I don't normally go in River Island, but lately when I have walked by I've noticed they're stocking a great range of bags and clutches, think lots of bright colours, dainty chains, quilting and mock croc, it reminds me of my Italian Nonna's bag collection! While more subdued than some of my colourful favourites, this silver one is a keeper:

Warehouse:These fringe boots made me go inside the shop to check out the price tag, not cheap, but totally worth it:

Oasis: Another shop I hardly ever step into, I ended up in the Oasis section in a department, and was surprised by finding these Lanvin-esque lattice work, toeless boots.

New Look: A favourite from my days as an pre-teen shopped, where I stocked up on pink hoodies, fake fur trimmed parkas and bangles, there's still a lot of quality goods to be found in New Look, they just have a bit of looking for, I think this black, drop pocket dress is a wee bit of a find:

H&M: I walk into H&M and want to buy everything, it's a principle of the universe, along with a white woolen waistcoat, this leather mini skirt stood out especially:Primark: Ah, no write up about the high street would be complete without a nod to Primark, the new champion of cheap fashion that you aren't ashamed to leave the house in. Tempted by a Luella style cream handbag and a pearl alice band, this statement necklace won my heart, and at £8, it'll soon win my cash card too!

But wait! I hear you cry, what about Topshop? If you've been following thus far, you will have learnt anything to do with Topshop deserves a post of it's own :P

Adore Arora

If there's one thing I love more than home grown fashion talent, it's new international talent, and there are few better examples of this than Manish Arora. Extravagant, bold and playful just about summaries the ethos of hot Indian designer Manish Arora. Founded in 1997, Manish Arora, (and his label by the same name), took off in 2002 when it opened it's flagship New Delhi store and won Best Women's Ready to Wear designer at the Mumbai Indian Fashion Awards in 2004. Already acclaimed in the East, 2005 saw Manish Arora go on to receive global recognition after the Victoria and Albert museum invited the label to display it's creations as part of their 'Global Local' exhibition, and made his London fashion week debut. Last year Manish collaborated with Walt Disney, and the artists Keiichi Tanaami and Subodh Gupta for his A/W 08 collection, proving that his label is one with a truly global credentials. Manish's best known creation is probably this stunning piece of whimsical design ingenuity, that is part of his S/S 09 collection, and worn by Katy Perry as one of her ten outfits, at the 2008 MTV awards.

With a 'Don't like my designs? You don't have to', attitude, Manish incorporates traditional designs and workmanship into his western friendly collections by using rich, vibrant colours, such as stunning peacock blues, and lots of patchwork and sequins, that make every garment a stunningly original piece.

If you love Manish's work, but can't afford his S/S collection, you can grab a piece of the action from the higher end of the high street. Having collaborated with Reebok to produce his 'Fresh Fish', footwear range of uber hip urban sports shoes, your feet can get all dressed up in bright designs and zesty hues that would drive Agy yn wild.

Stocked globally, and found in the UK in Liverpool and Bath, as well as at six London shops, including Harrods , and cutting edge designer central, Dover Street Market, it's never been easy to go all exotic and adore Manish Arora.

Fashion Takes a Day Off

Like the catwalk season, my mini-exam season has now come to an end until the summer! To celebrate I gate crashed a friend's house to gorge on strawberry cheesecake Hagen Daas ice cream, play Wii sports and make my Resident Evil 4 debut; my RE verdict : gore grows on you.

Up at 5.30 this morning to cram in the last few bits of revision before my 8.30 Politics exam, today was one of those days where I officially took a break from even attempting to look human, lettings fashion take a day off. Throwing on a black, bracelet sleeved, sailor necked top from Zara, a red and white tartan wool mini skirt from Mango, pair of black tights and my fail safe just-below-the-knee brown leather boots from Office, as an after thought to improve my 'Croydon face lift' ponytail and glasses combo. So, looking like a girl that needed a facial and a good night sleep, you can imagined how happy I was when my photography student friend whipped out her SLR and suggested a set of impromptu snaps. Despite frowning and avoiding the flash by fixing my attention on the Rubik cube I'd been playing around with, I really like how this photo came out : this girl's got talent.

Now, I think it's about time I got a good nights sleep, not before, of course, burning all my revision notes, I'm no pyromaniac, it's just SO CATHARTIC.

Style Icon of the Week : Janis Joplin

Who?: With it being World Peace Sunday, I think it's appropriate that iconic free loving hippie, singer/ songwriter Janis Joplin should be this week's style icon. An unconventional beauty who as mercilessly bullied at school for being 'ugly' and a 'freak', Janis grew up to go from being a creative outcast in small town Texas to the centre of the thriving hippie scene in San Francisco. An incredibly talented blues and folk musician, all three of Janis' albums have gone platinum and triple platinum. Despite her undisputed talent, Janis struggled with drugs and alcohol addictions all her life, dying tragically from a heroin overdose aged just 27.

Why?: Cited by Vogue as 'the most staggering leading woman in rock' and ranked 28 on Rolling Stones list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time, Janis was a strong woman with an equality strong, unconventional style that matched her life. While designers were cutting up hemlines with the birth of the mini skirt and experimenting with bold prints, Janis channelled essential hippie chic, favouring thrift store styling, incorporating bell bottoms, loose kaftans and recycled curtains into her look. She defined her style with endless accessories, adding heavy, intricate rings, beaded necklaces, embroidered bags, headscarves and Cossack hats to all her outfits.

What can we learn from her style?: Figure head of the hippie movement, Janis didn't seek to carve out 'a look', nor did she live her life around fashion; fashion lived around her. For Janis, clothes revolved around her musical style, not the other way around, and her outfits provided an outlet to express her sound and personality. A typical hippie, Janis' low maintenance free flowing hair and make up free skin are a world away from today's hyper polished pop stars, yet for me, her style is infinitely more iconic. It's easy to get carried away with following fashion, but sometimes we all need to take a step back and take a look at our personal style, because even if it flies in the face of all the catwalk trends, individuality is infinitely more stylish than conventionality.

Blitz Britz

Since making her catwalk debut in 2000, the quintessentially British and self confessed 'horsey girl' Luella Bartley has gone on to become an invaluable figure in the current British fashion scene, reminding the world that Brit chick style is where it's at. Always cool and stylish, but eccentric and experimental, unafraid to style pointed witch's hats with her A/W 08 catwalk looks, Luella's Spring/Summer 09 collection keeps up the pace. Filled with ditsy florals, twee tweeds, delicate gloves, perfectly painted red lips, elaborate ribbons, and carefully placed netting, Luella's catwalk echoed the prim and proper elegance of war time Blitz Britain, brought up to date for 2009 with punchy purples, sherbet oranges and fluid, sexy tailoring. Unashamed of drawing of her strengths, Luella has also snuck reminders of her much imitated Spring/Summer 08 florals into the collection.

Chanel-esque tweeds, (reminiscent of Luella's A/W 06 collection), are styled with bare 'war time' legs, where nylon tights had become a precious entity, leading many women to staining their legs with tea bags to give the illusion of tights. But single strands of pearls have been swapped for clusters of brightly coloured beads, and the traditional 'set head' has been replaced with wildly backcombed and dressed up hair, that reflects a time of plenty, rather than fashion on war time rations.

Simple war time styles, such as the knee length, shapeless coat and serviceable gingham dress provide the perfect canvas for bold colours and notice-me combinations.

My favourite look for the collection has to be this hyperbolically 1950's ensemble. The slanted, half moon glasses and large buttoned cardigan say 'librarian', the 70's wallpaper print, puffball miniskirt and fuchsia blouse says 'rockability, jiving teenager', while the elegant wrist gloves, 'Kensington set' cream leather handbag and candy pink heels scream 'society lady about time'. All this is topped off with an over sized floral bow, reminiscent of Luella's S/S 08 collection, where miniature florals ruled the roost, and the outfit is best accessorised with a book of poetry or heavy looking broadsheet.
Also, thanks for all the good luck messages, they were very much needed! It feels good to know that after my Government and Politics exam on Monday morning (cue this weekend being spend revising/avoiding revising), all my exams will be out the way until May!

Exotica

It's the middle of the January exam season, and my first exam, (Philosophy and Ethics) is up tomorrow afternoon, with the promise of a Government and Politics exam on Monday. As my teachers say, no pressure, just remember, you're future financial and social status may rest upon the results on these hour long exams; comforting huh? Panic revising and exam fever have turned Clothes Before Hoes HQ into stress central, but after spending the evening hunched over my philosophy notes, highlighting, re-reading and copying bits and pieces onto fuchsia post it notes, to pop all over my room, I've reached an important conclusion: I really need a holiday.

My soul slowly being crushed by endless revision that goes in my brain and comes right out again, I'm in dire need of an exotic, far flung holiday to somewhere hot and sunny to set me back on track. Unable to afford anything more exotic than cocktails at Las Iguanas, Latin bar on the Southbank, it's comforting to know that in the fashion world Frida Giannini is starting to feel the burn too, that is if Gucci's S/S collection is anything to go by.

After naming her Spring show 'Gucci Exotica', Gucci's S/S collection is exactly what it says on the tin; bright colours, bold prints, the archetypal holiday postcard in fabric form. While Giannini has experimented with a variety of bold, pseudo-80's prints, the main vibe I'm getting off her collection is defiantly Hawaiian utility chic. I would never have predicted that the Hawaiian shirt, stereotypical symbol of speed boating riding Cuban gangsters and fat tourists wielding fake floral garlands on a cruise or package holiday, would be gracing the catwalks this season, but this new twist on the classic 'cheese and grapes on a cocktail stick' print, re-creates the Hawaiian shirt as new wardrobe must have.

Printing sleek Hawaiian prints on tailored, but casual and delicate silk blouses, rather than the usual baggy cotton, Giannini has teamed her Hawaiian shirts with sleek, two piece utility suits in vibrant colours that remind me of parrots and exotic looking cocktails, adding patent high heels and ribbon trimmed trilby's to give a fun twist to this look, refusing to commit to 'cruise' or 'city'. Attention grabbing brights and playful prints make the suit fun and fresh, giving everyone a taste summer holidays every 9-5.

By altering the Hawaiian print, to make it less '80's floral', and more 'abstract floral', the same theme is carried over into bandeau bikinis, sexy mini dresses and loose, floating tops, worn tucked into tailored 'city' shorts made from soft, 'holiday' fabrics'.

To add your own spin to Giannini's look, why not replace your over sized plaid shirt with a 'cheese on a stick', Hawaiian shirt, it might look terrible on a 40+ holiday maker, but great on you! Not available in the high street shops, (these one-of-a-kind babies only seem to be found in Miami and C&A circa 1996), you can find some amazing, floral and lurid Hawaiian shirts in your dad's wardrobe or local charity shops. But for the best selection of every style of Hawaiian print imaginable, in shorts, skirts and flip flops as well as men's shirts, you can't beat Beyond Retro. Their Brick Lane store is always choc a bloc with crazy prints begging for someone to pull them off, so if you live near enough, get yourself down to Cheshire Street (or else the darkest depth of your seedy uncle's wardrobe), and grab yourself a one-of-a-kind piece of the hottest Exoticia.

Topshop Treats and English Lit Neeks

It's official; I've got a growing obsession with the new 'Glory Days' collection from Topshop. Full of florals, light colours and airy shapes that make me think of beaching in Brighton and long, sunny spring days; this collection is the perfect antidote to dark evenings and rainy days. My two favourite pieces from the collection are this coral, floral print, bat winged crop top:And this gorgeously prim and proper rose print tunic:

I'd wear the crop top over a black or white ribbed vest and a dark mini, or on it's own with dark high waisted jeans or shorts. With a suspicious and sneaky muffin top like mine, high waists and structuring are essential to pull off a skimpy cropped top without looking like a hillbilly at a barbeque.

The key to pulling off statement girly florals without looking like your grandma picks out your outfits for you, it to keep the length short and flirty, and because this tunic has a high neck and modest cut, you can pull off a micro-mini length and without too 'trying-to-be-sexy'. This tunic is the perfect length for this, short enough to be either worn on it's own with pumps, heels, plimsolls, or even with DMs to toughen it up and rough up it's girly edges, and long enough to be dressed up with tights and t-bars for family occasions.

Boys Are Back in Town

Finally, after teasing us with two years of dormancy, one of the coolest art rock bands of the 21st century, Franz Ferdinand, is back with a hot new album set to rock up the charts in 2009. The sexy Scot, Alex 'guyliner' Kapranos, and his immaculately groomed crowd have returned with their third album, 'Tonight; Franz Ferdinand', (due for release on 29th January), and with it they are not just bringing hot new tunes , but some lush guy fashions to the table. After being chosen to front Greek/American designer, John Varvatos' S/S 09 campaign, it's clear that for the Franz Ferdinand boys, it about style as well as substance.

Former Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Converse designer, after establishing his own men's wear range 2000, John Varvatos has gone on to do great things in the fashion world, winning GQ's designer of the year 2007, and the Perry Ellis award for menswear. In these campaign photos, the Franz Ferdinand boys do Varvatos' designs justice, showing off their slim line figures with fitted jackets, leather winkle pikers, black out sunglasses, skinny leg trousers and even skinnier ties.

The winners of a Mercury Music Prize, NME award, MTV award and two Brit awards, there's no doubt that Franz Ferdinand have got all the right alternative-rock credentials, with their debut album, (and my soundtrack to 2004) 'Franz Ferdinand' being cited as 'album of the year' by NME . After single handedly reviving both the British alternative scene and the popularity of the fitted blazer, it was no wonder that, while incredibly popular, their second album, 'You Could Have It So Much Better', didn't ride on the same success. For me the only hits from this album were the song 'Do You Wanna' and the gorge 1950's style sports jackets that they donned in the video. But after taking two years out to write new songs, the boys are back in town and ready to lay some riffs, and whatever their forth coming album is like, one thing is for sure; these guys know how to rock a look.

Style Icon of the Week : Debbie Harry

Who?: Rock icon, style innovator, and all round legend; Debbie Harry changed the way that the world thought about fashion as a means of self expression. Perhaps best known under her indie rock incarnation as 'Blondie', Debbie Harry rocked up the 70's and early 80's underground scene as lead singer of hotter than hot band, Blondie. Despite fronting two other bands, launching her own, highly successful solo singing career, and appearing in over 30 films and musicals, Debbie will always be best known for her big hits with Blondie, their hit single 'Heart in a Glass' appearing on the Gucci fragrance adverts, and being re-released as a club remix.

Why?: Imitated by many, including Madonna, Courtney Love and Sophie Dahl, Debbie's fearless, eccentric and experimental street style combined sexy, glamorous and rebellious in a way that hadn't been done before. Closely associated with Andy Warhol and his New York cool set, Debby was at the forefront of fashion innovation and cutting edge of style. Known for her iconic brightly coloured and bold print dresses, skin tight jeans, chunky jewellery and unexpected outfit combinations, Debbie's style is almost as famous as her music. Expressing herself not just through her clothes, but through her trademark backcombed two-tone blond hair and wildly coquettish make up, Debbie treated her clothes as a theatrical costume, a means of self expression to tell the world what she was about before she even opened her mouth; that's my kind of fashion thinking.

What can we learn from her style?: At the start of a new year, maybe it's time to look to Debbie for inspiration, and see if we can change the way that we think about fashion in 2009. Debbie admits that she is 'not a high maintenance person', and described the process of picking out clothes as , 'pulling things out of the wardrobe ... and it just went from there'. Never polished but always perfect, Debbie shows us that sometimes the best outfits are the ones that you don't think about too much, so forget matching your shoes to your shirt and your bag to your bra; be bold, be brave, be yourself.

Undress to Impress

After an extended break I'm back for my first Clothes Before Hoes post of the new year, with a new fashion conundrum; underwear as outerwear, a do or don't?

Once the hallmark of Ibiza clubbers, street corner prostitutes and Madonna circa 1984, thanks to the S/S 09 catwalks, underwear on show is making a class act comeback. After giving a glimpse of high society undies under long layers of lace in their A/W 08 collections, this spring, Prada is letting go of any prudish premises, and letting underwear take centre stage. As seen in indulgent shades of champagne, rich raspberry, dramatic black and virginal white, Prada is teaming beautiful bow and button detail, balcony bras with pencil skirts, shrugs, bare skin and elegant chignons for a look that is as classic and sexy as a Bond girl, only with a touch more glamour in the form of chandelier earrings.

Having graced the catwalks at Nini Ricci and Louise Goldin's shows, it's clear that sheer is back too, bringing unashamed bra flashing with it. Not in the manner of Madonna's 'Get into the Groove' street style, more in the style of a sexy secretary seducing her boss, as demonstrated at Yves Saint Laurent; a very sexy evening look if perhaps a little too much for a daytime trip to the shops.

But in reality, how easy is it to undress to impress? Apart from the obvious fact that disgusting English weather, (looking out of my window as I type, all I can see is snow), is not conducive to sultry near -nudity; the threat of looking like you can use your nipples to tune into Radio One looming with every gust of wind will never be considered a good look. But sometimes, like bright orange body -con dresses and denim jumpsuits, what seems like a bad piece on the peg can turn out to be a fashion revelation in reality, as long as you give it a chance.

The key to wearing underwear as outerwear is keeping it classy and classic, if belched denim hotpants are your thing, then wearing them out with a bra probably isn't for you. But if the words 'wide leg trousers', 'pencil skirts' and 'floaty dresses' conjure up images of your wardrobe, then this is a trend for you to embrace. My advice? Try unbuttoning a blouse or wearing a sheer version of your favourite cut to show off a beautiful bra, (think pin up, not practical), wear with natural make up and bold lipstick for a sexy daytime look. For night it's safe to be a touch braver, if you're wearing a fitted jacket or blazer, ditch the t-shirt you're wearing underneath it and do up the buttons to give more than just a hint of bra, without getting the whole butcher's shop out. If you're going to a club or a party, why not choose a bustier or corset to wear as I top? Replace the stockings with skinnies and this Ann Summer's bustier from their new 'Destiny' range gives you VIP access to one of spring's hottest trends.

Or if your prefer to keep your high street sex shops finds under your clothes, why not invest in a glamorous 1950's style corset, from 'What Katy Did'? Chanel, Daydreams and Penguins

They say that for every decision that we make, a hundred different parallel universes are created where every possible consequence of every possible decision that we could have taken is played out. Therefore, out of billions of trillions of parallel universes floating around, it figures that somewhere there is some improbable universe where penguins have proved to be devious political masterminds, and I'm simultaneously Mrs.Faris Rotter, and a glamorous Princess of Brunei, who holidays on daddy's private islands scattered across the globe, wears haute couture socks, parties with celebrities and spends her winters skiing in Aspen.

It's on these cosy ski holidays inside a luxury log cabin, (think Faris and me on lying on a rug, drinking Moet in front of a roaring fire), that I wear the latest ski fashion according to Chanel, and model these hot pieces on and off piste.

With long, crimped hair, a Chanel wardrobe and a body hot enough to melt the icy slopes, this universe is the one I should be in, but until theoretical physicists break into the next dimension and discover how to move from universe to universe; I'll have to stick to my daydreams.

PS: Note the sinister looking penguins on the grey jumpers. I told you that penguins will become political masterminds with evil plans for world domination, and now it's up to Karl Largerfeld and me to save the world before it's too late ... well, it's probably already happened in another universe.
